Rail repairs close portion of U.S. 49 nightly in Hattiesburg
Beginning Monday, March 23, a stretch of U.S. Highway 49 in Hattiesburg will be closed nightly for railroad bridge repairs, the Hattiesburg Police Department said. Norfolk Southern will repair the rail line at the bridge crossing Highway 49 near the Country Club Road bridge, the department said.
The work will require closure of both ramps from U.S. 11 to U.S. 49 South. Closures are scheduled on weekday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. to limit impacts on daytime traffic, the notice said.
Motorists should expect delays during the nightly work and are encouraged to use alternate routes. The Hattiesburg Police Department reminded drivers to use caution and follow all traffic control devices in the work zone.
U.S. Highway 49 is a major north-south route through Mississippi, so the closures may affect commuters and local businesses. The notice said the repair is expected to take four weeks. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
