Pike County sheriff urges safety for Fourth of July
Sheriff Bryant “Wally” Jones of Pike County urged residents and visitors to prioritize safety during Fourth of July celebrations in a Facebook post Friday.
Jones said people should buckle up, obey speed limits, avoid distractions and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He urged motorists to designate a sober driver or make other safe travel arrangements and said one responsible decision can save lives.
The sheriff also warned those spending time on the Bogue Chitto River, nearby lakes or other waterways to wear properly fitted life jackets, avoid operating boats while impaired and watch children closely because conditions can change quickly. He advised ATV and recreational vehicle users to wear helmets and safety gear, stay off public roadways unless permitted and supervise young riders.
Jones reminded pool users that children should never be left unattended and urged secured fencing and locked gates. He also advised following local and state fireworks laws and keeping young children from handling fireworks without close adult supervision.
“The men and women of the Pike County Sheriff’s Office will be working throughout the holiday weekend to help keep our community safe,” Jones wrote. “From my family to yours, may God bless you, may God bless Pike County, and may God continue to bless the United States of America.”
