Mother, daughter die in Montgomery County house fire

KILMICHAEL, Miss. — A mother and daughter died in a house fire in Montgomery County on Friday morning, Montgomery County Sheriff Jeff Tompkins said.

Tompkins identified the victims as Mary Pittman, 68, and her daughter, Consietta Pittman, 42. Tompkins said Mary Pittman was wheelchair-bound and bed-bound and that her daughter served as her caregiver, according to WTVA.

Officials said the cause of the fire remains under investigation, but foul play is not suspected, WTVA reported. Authorities have not released additional details about how the blaze began or the timeline of when it was discovered.

House fires can present particularly hazardous conditions when occupants have limited mobility and require caregiving. Local fire investigators typically examine origin and cause, and county law enforcement coordinate with fire officials during such inquiries.

The deaths will be of concern to the Kilmichael and wider Montgomery County communities as investigators work to establish what happened. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
