Lafayette County sheriff warns of impaired driving during game weekends

The Lafayette County Sheriff's Office is urging residents to plan sober rides for ballgame weekends, warning that the events bring heavy traffic and increased risks from impaired drivers on county roads.

Sheriff Joey East said deputies regularly see people drive after drinking during game weekends. The office advises residents to arrange a designated driver, rideshare service or sober friend before a tailgate begins and says even a couple of drinks can affect reaction time and judgment.

The sheriff's office also advises motorists to buckle up, remain alert and leave extra following distance because game weekends can mean more impaired drivers on the road. Deputies will conduct extra patrols before, during and after the game.

Residents who see something dangerous are urged to call 911. The office encourages people to celebrate safely and get home to their families.
