Teen charged with capital murder after Simpson County standoff leaves two dead, deputy wounded

A teenager has been charged after a deadly incident in Simpson County that led to a law enforcement standoff, left two people dead and sent a deputy to the hospital.

Authorities identified the suspect as 17-year-old Cordarius Laray Hobbs. He is charged with capital murder, armed robbery and burglary and is currently being held in the Rankin County Jail.

The situation began when deputies went to a residence for a welfare check. When they arrived, officials said they found an active burglary underway. During the response, Hobbs allegedly opened fire on deputies, striking one of them, before barricading himself inside the home.

Multiple agencies responded as the standoff continued. Officers later deployed tear gas into the residence. Authorities said Hobbs then fled the home on foot and fired toward law enforcement. A state trooper returned fire, striking Hobbs.

Hobbs was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The deputy who was shot was also treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

After officers entered the home, two people were found dead inside. Their identities have not yet been released while officials notify their families.
