Lafayette County, Oxford monitor late-week storms, potential severe weather on Friday
Lafayette County and the city of Oxford are monitoring a storm system expected to affect the region Friday, according to local officials.
Forecasters predict a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday night, with no widespread severe weather expected at this time.
On Friday, storms become more likely, and some could turn severe. Possible hazards include damaging winds, hail, heavy rain, and isolated tornadoes, mainly from Friday afternoon into early Saturday.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center has highlighted a 15% chance of severe storms in the area for Friday. The outlook may change as the weather system develops.
Officials advise residents to prepare now by ensuring they have multiple ways to receive warnings, charging electronic devices, reviewing shelter plans (especially for mobile home residents), and staying updated on the forecast. Authorities will provide updates as confidence in the forecast increases over the next 24 to 36 hours.
