Lowndes County warns motorists to use caution in construction zones

The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office in Mississippi is urging motorists to stay alert and drive safely when traveling through construction and work zones as road improvement projects continue, the office said.

The sheriff’s office said drivers should slow down immediately when approaching a work area, put phones away and avoid distractions, increase following distance to allow extra time to stop, and merge early when traffic patterns change. Motorists are also reminded to obey all traffic signs and follow directions from flaggers and workers.

The office noted that rear-end collisions remain the most common type of crash in work zones and are often caused by speeding, distracted driving and following too closely. Officials said being prepared for sudden stops or changing traffic conditions and exercising patience can help protect road workers, emergency personnel and other motorists.

Work zones are areas where construction, maintenance or utility work alters normal traffic patterns and often require reduced speeds and extra caution. The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office said it appreciates the public’s cooperation and that a few extra seconds of caution can save lives. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
