Mississippi post backs separate girls, boys sports after Supreme Court decision
A Facebook post from an account in Mississippi said the state has long allowed girls to compete in girls sports and boys to compete in boys sports and praised what it called a Supreme Court decision defending female athletes across the country.
“In Mississippi, we decided years ago that we are gonna let girls play girls sports and we are gonna let boys play boys sports,” the post said. “Biological men should not be participating in women’s sports. Men are bigger, faster, stronger, and they can pose serious safety risks to female competitors.” The post added that the development was “just common sense” and expressed gratitude for what it called a “historic decision.”
The comments reflect a long-running national debate over participation of transgender athletes in school and collegiate sports. Lawmakers, school officials and athletic associations across the United States have wrestled with questions of fairness, safety and nondiscrimination as they craft eligibility rules.
The issue has practical implications for student-athletes, school programs and sports governing bodies and remains legally and politically contentious. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
