Mississippi law sends certain juvenile firearm cases to adult court

A new Mississippi law took effect July 1 allowing prosecutors to file certain firearm-related charges against minors in adult Circuit Court instead of Youth Court, state officials announced in a social media post.

Senate Bill 2710 applies to qualifying offenses that the announcement listed as violent crimes involving a firearm; possession or trafficking of stolen firearms; drive-by shootings and other firearm crimes; and illegal firearm possession tied to felonies.

Youth courts traditionally handle juvenile cases with a focus on rehabilitation and often with different procedures and record-keeping than adult courts. Being prosecuted in Circuit Court can expose juveniles to adult criminal proceedings and potential adult penalties and records.

The Facebook announcement said the law is intended to increase accountability for serious firearm-related offenses and strengthen public safety across Mississippi, and it urged parents and guardians to discuss the consequences of illegal firearm activity with their children.

The measure is part of broader state efforts to address gun violence; legal advocates and courts will determine how the change is implemented in individual cases. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
