Mississippi auditor urges cutting waste to lower car tag fees

State Auditor Shad White said Mississippi can lower car tag fees and provide relief to taxpayers if state officials get serious about cutting waste in government.

Car tag fees, also known as vehicle registration fees, are charged to motorists by the state and are a recurring expense for many households. Proposals to reduce those fees typically draw attention because they affect everyday budgets and can become a focal point in broader debates over state spending and taxation.

The auditor’s office conducts audits of state agencies and local governments to identify inefficiencies, improper spending and opportunities for reform. White has used that platform in the past to highlight areas where he says money could be saved; he said cutting waste could ease the burden of car tag fees.

Any move to lower fees would likely require lawmakers or state officials to consider budget changes, administrative adjustments or reallocation of resources. White’s comments add to an ongoing discussion about government efficiency and taxpayer relief in Mississippi.
