NamUs connects missing, unidentified persons cases nationwide

NamUs is a free, nationwide resource that connects missing persons and unidentified persons cases across the United States, a Facebook post from the program said. The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, known as NamUs, helps share investigative information and promote collaboration among agencies and families.

The post said NamUs supports law enforcement, medical examiners, coroners, forensic professionals and families to help bring answers. Resources listed include missing persons case support, unidentified persons case support, database connections, and forensic and investigative tools.

The Facebook post included the lines, “Every person has a name. Every name has a story,” and urged readers to learn more at namus.gov. NamUs aims to centralize records and foster cooperation in cases that can be complex and prolonged for investigators and relatives.

Experts and advocates say centralized databases can speed identifications and case resolutions by making information more accessible across jurisdictions. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
