Mississippi faces dangerous heat, isolated severe storms

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency warned Wednesday that dangerous heat and a chance of isolated severe storms are expected across Mississippi on July 1, 2026.

MEMA said heat indices could reach 110° to 115°, with much of western Mississippi under a Level 3 (Significant) heat risk. The agency said prolonged time outdoors could quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

MEMA said isolated severe thunderstorms are possible statewide this afternoon and evening, mainly 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., with the primary threat being damaging wind gusts. The agency urged residents to stay weather-aware and prepared to take shelter if warnings are issued.

The agency repeated safety guidance issued in its social media post, advising people to drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks if working or recreating outdoors, move to air conditioning when possible and never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle. The post also urged residents to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings. The heat index combines air temperature and humidity to reflect how hot conditions feel and can increase the risk of heat-related illness. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
