Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus retreat opens in Greenville
Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus members gathered in Greenville for the opening welcome plenary breakfast of the 2026 MLBC Retreat at Harlow’s Casino Resort & Spa, according to the City of Greenville. The event was held Thursday, September 17.
Greenville Mayor Errick D. Simmons and Washington County Board of Supervisors President Carl McGee welcomed the attendees. MLBC Chairman Rep. Kabir Karriem, legislators, mayors, elected officials and community leaders also participated.
Simmons described the Mississippi Delta as a region whose people have influenced Mississippi and American history, culture, music, the civil rights movement and democratic traditions. He said elected leaders should turn that history into progress in education, health care, infrastructure, economic opportunity, public safety, civic participation and stronger futures for children.
“This is more than a gathering—it is a historic moment on historic ground,” Simmons said. He also said leaders have a responsibility to honor those who came before them by making history in the present.
