Reeves praises Capitol Police, cites defense argument in Lewis case

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves praised the Capitol Police and Chief Bo Luckey in a Facebook post discussing the department’s creation, officers’ work in Jackson and a defense argument in a case involving Lewis’ vehicle.

Reeves said the state created the Capitol Complex Improvement District with what he described as a goal of beginning Jackson’s long-term recovery by restoring an understanding of law and order. He said the state began by building the Capitol Police, a process he described as difficult, risky and accompanied by litigation.

He said some officers were placed in dangerous situations and responded in a manner consistent with protecting residents of Jackson and surrounding areas. Reeves said the officers helped change the trajectory of Mississippi’s capital city.

Reeves said he appreciated Luckey and the men and women of Capitol Police. He also said he had not heard the entirety of the testimony in the case and did not know why the attorney general chose to prosecute.

“I back the blue. Mississippi backs the blue. And I will continue to pray daily for our officers that sacrifice to keep us safe!!” Reeves wrote.

The post also said the defense argued that officers had a right to defend themselves when Lewis’ vehicle moved toward them.
