Winter weather worsens road hazards in north Mississippi

The Mississippi Department of Transportation said in a Facebook post at 11:45 a.m. on Jan. 28, 2026, that a current map shows widespread hazardous road conditions across north Mississippi and urged drivers to limit travel to emergencies only.

The post included a color-coded legend: routes marked in blue are passable but experiencing icing; routes in red show severe icing and extreme congestion and should be avoided if at all possible; and routes in orange are passable but have lane blockages in some areas due to downed power lines or fallen trees. MDOT cautioned that “passable” does not mean safe.

Officials directed motorists to check live road conditions by downloading the MDOT Traffic app from the App Store or Google Play or by visiting MDOTtraffic.com. The agency said the map reflects current conditions and advised drivers to exercise extreme caution if travel is unavoidable.

Winter storms can quickly create slick surfaces and blocked lanes that increase the risk of crashes and delays. This is a developing situation and will be updated as more information becomes available.
