Wheelchair pedestrian killed in two-vehicle crash on Raymond Road

JACKSON — A pedestrian traveling in a wheelchair was killed Monday evening after being struck by two vehicles on Raymond Road, the Jackson Police Department said.

Officers responded about 6:40 p.m. to the intersection of Raymond Road and Wilson Boulevard for a reported fatal crash, police said. Investigators said the victim was traveling eastbound near the center lane when a 2012 white Ford Fusion, also traveling east, struck the wheelchair user and ejected him into the westbound lanes.

Police said the victim was then struck by a 2010 silver Chevrolet Malibu that was traveling west in the inside lane. The victim became trapped under the Malibu and was extricated by the Jackson Fire Department. He was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Both drivers remained at the scene and were interviewed by responding officers and an accident investigator, the department said. Each driver was cited for no insurance. The Jackson Police Department said the investigation is ongoing. Pedestrians who use wheelchairs are especially vulnerable in traffic collisions, and investigators are examining the circumstances that led to the crash. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
