University of Mississippi closes Oxford campus through Feb. 8 after ice storm

The University of Mississippi said the Oxford campus will remain closed through Sunday, Feb. 8, because of extensive damage and ongoing recovery from a recent ice storm and severe winter weather.

All classes, events and campus activities are canceled, the university said in a social media alert on Facebook. The school, the city and Lafayette County have reported downed trees and power lines, power outages, falling ice and hazardous road conditions.

Officials urged people in the area to check weather and road conditions before traveling and noted some roads remain closed. The university pointed to free resources from the Mississippi Department of Transportation for road and weather information and asked those not on campus to delay returning to allow first responders and campus teams to complete recovery work.

Work continues to restore power and water, clear roads and walkways, remove debris and assess building and infrastructure damage, the university said. The Student Union is open as a warming center with overnight access and the Rebel Market is operating as a food service location. OUT buses have resumed limited service from most Master Lease locations to the Student Union and Walmart from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; riders should follow @outransit for schedule updates.

Regional campuses will set hours in coordination with their host campuses. The Office of the Provost will share additional information about coursework and academic adjustments. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
