Ocean Springs High enters shelter-in-place after phone threat

Ocean Springs High School entered a shelter-in-place Thursday afternoon after a phone-in threat to the campus, the Ocean Springs School District said in a Facebook post at 3:24 p.m.

District administrators immediately notified authorities, and Ocean Springs School District police, the Ocean Springs Police Department and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department secured and swept the campus, the district said. Officials reported that students and staff were not in danger at any point.

While multiple law enforcement agencies cleared the campus, the district said Ocean Springs High will remain in shelter-in-place until dismissal at 3:51 p.m. Checkouts are not permitted and visitors may not enter the building. The district warned parents to expect delays during dismissal.

An earlier district update at 2:40 p.m. said the shelter-in-place was enacted out of an abundance of caution and urged parents and guardians not to come to the school because doing so could interfere with emergency operations and block access for emergency vehicles. The district said students would not be able to leave campus until law enforcement lifts the shelter-in-place.

The district said the safety and welfare of students and staff remain its highest priority and thanked the community for its patience. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
