Mississippi DOT warns of widespread ice in North Mississippi
The Mississippi Department of Transportation said in a Facebook post that North Mississippi is covered in ice, making driving extremely dangerous and urging residents to stay home and stay warm if they can.
MDOT said those who must travel should use extreme caution and reduce speed. The agency oversees state highways and coordinates winter road treatments and travel advisories, including alerts about icy conditions that can make roads slick and unpredictable.
Icy roadways reduce traction and increase the risk of collisions and road closures. Officials generally advise drivers to allow extra travel time, increase following distance, avoid sudden braking or steering movements and carry emergency supplies when travel is necessary.
Residents should monitor updates from MDOT and local authorities through official social media channels and the department’s website for information on road conditions and closures. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
