Mississippi allows SNAP replacement for food lost in disasters

The Mississippi Department of Human Services said current Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients who lost food because of a recent disaster or weather event may request replacement SNAP benefits.

MDHS said replacement benefits cover only food purchased with SNAP and will not exceed a recipient’s usual monthly SNAP amount. Recipients must report the loss to their local MDHS office within 10 days of the date of the disaster or weather event to be eligible.

Qualifying losses include food destroyed by flood, fire, tornado or power outage. MDHS said a power outage must be caused by a weather event and last more than 4 hours to qualify.

To apply, MDHS said recipients should report the disaster or loss to their local office and submit Form 508 with documented proof of the loss by mail, email or secure upload. MDHS provided a secure upload link at https://ea-upload.mdhs.ms.gov.

SNAP provides monthly benefits to help low-income households buy food. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
