Man charged with murder after 71-year-old fatally shot in Jackson home
JACKSON — A 40-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder after a 71-year-old man was fatally shot inside a Jackson residence Saturday, police said.
Officers from Jackson Police Department Precinct 1 responded Saturday to a reported shooting at 1009 Branch St., where they found Johnny Bingham dead inside the home, investigators said.
Investigators said Bingham was shot while attempting to deescalate an argument that had taken place outside the residence between Bryant Grays, 40, and another individual. Police said Grays produced a firearm during the confrontation and shot Bingham before fleeing the scene.
Officers later located Grays hiding underneath a residence on Palm Street and took him into custody without incident, police said. He has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, authorities said. Possession of a firearm by a felon is typically charged when someone with a prior felony conviction is found to have a gun.
The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Jackson Police Department at 601-960-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
