Lowndes County urges drivers to give large trucks space

The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office on Traffic Tip Tuesday urged motorists to give large trucks and commercial vehicles plenty of room, citing significant blind spots and a high volume of semi-truck traffic traveling through the county.

“We want every driver in Lowndes County to get home safely at the end of the day,” Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said. “Understanding how to share the road with large trucks and giving them plenty of room can save lives.”

Officials noted that large trucks have blind spots on all sides, especially directly behind and alongside the cab. If a motorist cannot see a truck driver in the truck’s mirror, the truck driver cannot see the motorist, increasing the risk of a crash when smaller vehicles follow too closely or linger beside a truck.

The sheriff’s office offered several safety tips: leave plenty of space when following a truck, check mirrors often, never linger in a truck’s blind spot, and pass quickly on the left when possible while signaling early. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
