Coahoma County renews travel advisory as winter storm keeps roads hazardous

Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office renewed a travel advisory after the Winter Storm of 2026 left roadways icy and snow-covered, the office said in a Facebook post. The advisory remains in effect as temperatures have fallen and many roads remain slick and dangerous.

The sheriff’s office posted recent photographs documenting conditions on Highway 49 South near Clarksdale, Highway 61, New Africa Road, Stovall Road and Friars Point Road. The images also show a vehicle that slid off the roadway into a ditch because of icy conditions, the post said.

The office strongly discouraged unnecessary travel, saying driving now significantly increases the risk of accidents, serious injury and loss of life. Residents were urged to consider whether travel is absolutely essential before getting on the road.

Emergency and road crews will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as conditions improve. Coahoma County is in northwestern Mississippi, and winter storms in the region often create hazardous driving conditions. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
