DeSoto County Opens Homestead Exemption Filing Period

DeSoto County residents can now apply for the homestead exemption to reduce property taxes, county officials announced. The application period runs from January 5 through April 1, 2026, and applications are accepted only during this timeframe.

Residents can apply in person at the DeSoto County Tax Assessor’s Office located at 365 Losher Street, Suite 100, Hernando. The office is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding holidays. For more information, call 662-469-8029.

Applying for a homestead exemption is not automatic. Homeowners must submit an application and do not need to reapply annually unless certain circumstances change, such as purchasing a new home or turning 65. Eligible residents include those who are certified 100% disabled, have turned 90 or older, or have recently married or divorced and own a home.

For detailed application requirements, visit the county’s website at desotocountyms.gov.
