University closes through Feb. 1 as crews respond to icy conditions

The university is closed through Sunday, Feb. 1, including all classes and activities, the university said in a Facebook post Friday. Officials said safety remains the top priority as roads and walkways remain hazardous from ice, downed trees, falling ice and power lines.

Rebel Drive is closed, and nonessential pedestrian and vehicular traffic on campus is strongly discouraged to allow emergency crews and recovery teams to work safely, the post said. Students not currently on campus or in the local area are strongly discouraged from returning, and those in the area who must travel were urged to check weather and road conditions carefully.

Power has been restored to nearly 80% of the campus, the post said. All but one on-campus residence hall currently has power; officials said power in that hall is expected to be restored by the end of the day. Crews are working around the clock with local utility providers and emergency partners, and restoration status may fluctuate.

Rebel Market is open 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and is serving as the university’s food service location; food is available to anyone on campus regardless of meal plan. Housing staff, including resident assistants and community coordinators, are on site and front desks will be open 2–8 p.m. UPD is available to assist with transportation when conditions allow at 662-915-7234.

The Student Union is operating as a warming center with overnight access; food is not available there. OUT buses remain closed and riders were directed to follow @OUTransit for updates. Faculty will communicate directly with students about coursework adjustments, and the add/drop date currently remains Monday, Feb. 2, the post said. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
