Facebook post urges Michigan leaders to enforce reading standards

A Facebook post on a public page urged Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Michigan Democrats to stop reducing accountability standards and to prevent third-graders who cannot read from advancing to fourth grade.

The post said, “Again, it’s not complicated — and definitely shouldn’t be controversial. If a 3rd grader can’t read, they can’t go to the 4th grade.” It also called on state leaders to “stand up to the education establishment” and accused some adults in unions of opposing stricter accountability.

The governor of Michigan oversees state education policy and works with the Legislature and state education officials on standards and funding. Debates over promotion, retention and literacy standards have become common nationwide as policymakers weigh how best to support struggling readers while maintaining academic expectations.

Educators and researchers often view third-grade reading proficiency as a key milestone for later academic success, and changes to promotion policy can affect classroom practice, district accountability and political debates. The post frames the issue as a matter of simple priorities for children and calls for political action.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
