Indictments brought for alleged escapee, inmate who attacked jailer
Dec 16, 2024-Indictments have come down charging one man for felony escape from the DeSoto County Courthouse and another indictment of a jail inmate for assaulting a jailer.
Stephen Russell, Jr., age 27 of Southaven, was indicted by a grand jury on the felony escape charge. Russell allegedly escaped from deputies at the courthouse last week shortly after being convicted for trafficking fentanyl.
According to the DeSoto County District Attorney’s office, the indictment was the result of the task force the District Attorney’s Office enacted earlier this year to expedite indictments in cases that pose a significant threat to public safety and the public interest.
In less than four days, the District Attorney’s office secured the indictment, reflecting the efficiency and dedication of the office to hold dangerous individuals accountable swiftly.
Russell now faces the prospect of an extended prison sentence due to this additional charge.
“Fentanyl is flooding our communities and killing our citizens, and this tragic situation is largely due to the unchecked flow of illegal drugs across our border and the actions of foreign governments, particularly China, which continues to produce and ship this poison,” Barton said. “I am confident that come Jan. 20, that pipeline is going to start to dry up,” referring to the upcoming change of presidential administrations.
Russell was apprehended by Hernando police shortly after fleeing the courthouse—initially on foot and later by vehicle. The felony escape charge carries the potential for an additional five years to his current sentence.
The other indictment announced Monday charged John Riles, an inmate at the DeSoto County Adult Detention Center with assaulting a jailer last month.
On Nov. 14, at approximately 10:45 a.m., Riles became involved in an altercation with a jailer. During the incident, Riles tased the jailer, causing minor injuries and the jailer was treated for the injuries. Riles was immediately charged for his actions.
“Attacking law enforcement officers or first responders in DeSoto County will not be tolerated,” said Barton. “My office will continue to be tough on anyone who attempts to harm those who risk their lives to protect and serve our community.”
Riles, who was already jailed on separate charges, now faces additional charges for assaulting a law enforcement officer. The case will proceed through the legal system, with the District Attorney’s Office fully committed to ensuring justice is served.
