Yazoo River Gator Breaks Record

In what some might consider a nightmare to run across in the wild, a group of gator hunters have intentionally taken on that task and it resulted in a massive record breaking alligator being captured in Mississippi. Caught in the Yazoo River, the creature has broken the record for the longest alligator ever captured in the state of Mississippi.

With a length of 14 feet, 3 inches and a weight of 802.5 pounds, as well as a belly girth of 66 inches, the estimated sixty year old living dinosaur was not an easy task. The hunting group captured the alligator on day two of of Mississippi’s hunting season.

According to a post by group member Megan Sasser, it was a major fight to bring this big boy in, “We sat through a monsoon for over 3 hours… crunched 2 poles, survived the death roll a few times, displaced everything in the boat and still managed to bring this monster home!!!

The previous record was held by a 14 feet, 0.75 inches alligator that weighed 766.5 pounds and was bagged by a group of hunters in 2017.

Alligator hunting season in public waters is from Aug. 25 to Sept. 4 in Mississippi. The state began the alligator hunting program in 2005.
