Toppers rally, fall short in walk-off at Mobile

Mobile, Ala. — Blue Mountain Christian rallied from an early deficit and briefly took the lead Saturday, but Mobile used a ninth-inning rally to score the winning run and prevail 6-5 in the final game of the SSAC series.

Mobile struck first with a run in the third inning and added two more in the fifth to build a 3-0 lead. Blue Mountain Christian answered in the sixth when Jake Meilstrup delivered a two-RBI single to score Yaidel Perez and Ethan Hirons, cutting the deficit to one.

The Toppers seized the lead in the seventh with a three-run frame. Perez had a two-RBI single to score Cody Presley and Ross Polizzi, and Trace Roy followed with an RBI single to make it 5-3. Mobile hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, tied the game in the eighth and capitalized on a defensive miscue in the ninth for the walk-off run.

Blue Mountain Christian collected 12 hits. Roy led the offense at 4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Meilstrup finished 1-for-5 with two RBIs; Perez was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Gavin Foley had two hits, and Polizzi, Presley, Bryant and Reise Thomas each recorded a hit, the school said.

On the mound, Benji Webb worked 6.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts. Christian Manness allowed one run in relief and struck out one, and Morris threw the final inning and was charged with the loss. BMCU opens its next game at Rust College on March 17.
