Toppers push third-seeded UT-Southern to double overtime, fall 75-72
BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. — Blue Mountain Christian pushed third-seeded Tennessee Southern into double overtime before falling 75-72 in the opening round of the SSAC Women’s Basketball Championship in Montgomery, Alabama.
Tennessee Southern found a rhythm early, but the Toppers stayed close behind steady defense and patient offense. Momentum swung several times in regulation, and the teams remained tied at the end of the fourth quarter, forcing two extra periods before the third seed pulled ahead in the final seconds.
Blue Mountain received a balanced attack from its starters. Maddie Kirk led the Toppers with 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists. McKenzie Williams finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Isabella Carlson added 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Rebecca Walter had 10 points and seven rebounds, Lena Taylor hit three three-pointers on her way to nine points, and Kathryn Echols contributed seven points and seven rebounds.
The Toppers connected on 10 three-pointers, outrebounded their opponent with 53 rebounds and recorded 18 assists, reflecting a team that shared the ball throughout the contest.
