Trump approves Mississippi disaster declaration, official says
A Mississippi official said President Donald J. Trump approved a Disaster Declaration request, a move the official said will allow the state to continue response efforts and better help residents recover.
“I just got off the phone with a great friend of the people of Mississippi—President Donald J. Trump,” the official wrote in a Facebook post. The post said Trump told the official he had approved the request, that he “loved the people of Mississippi,” and that he “will be with us all the way.” The official expressed gratitude for the quick approval.
Federal disaster declarations typically make federal resources available to state and local governments and to residents affected by disasters, supporting cleanup, emergency services and recovery. State leaders often request such declarations after storms, flooding or other emergencies to unlock financial and logistical assistance from the federal government.
The official said the approval will help Mississippi continue its response and recovery work. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
