Facebook post alleges Mississippi overspends on purchases, services, insurance

A Facebook post by the page “If we told you Mississippi” alleges the state has paid far more than federal buyers and other states for a range of goods and services, and questioned how tax dollars are being spent.

The post said Mississippi bought the same television screens for $5,800 that the federal government bought for $2,200, spends $100 million a year on services for undocumented immigrants, pays more to insure state office buildings than Florida and spends a larger share of its education budget on administration than other Southern states. The post also alleged state tax dollars went to nonprofits that then used funds on items including Lyft rides and purchases of Bud Light.

The post framed the claims as examples of wasteful spending and asked, “would you think this was an April Fool’s joke?” It did not cite documents or sources in the post itself, and the claims have not been independently verified by this outlet.

This report summarizes allegations posted on social media and does not confirm their accuracy. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
