Scam texts impersonate DMV, Facebook post warns

A Facebook post warned residents about a scam text message being sent by people claiming to represent the Department of Motor Vehicles and urged recipients not to respond.

The post said the messages are not from the DMV and advised recipients to ignore them and not reply. It did not provide additional details about the text’s content or the number that sent it.

The DMV is the state agency that issues drivers licenses and handles vehicle registration, and scammers frequently impersonate government agencies to try to obtain personal information or payments. Text-message scams can aim to harvest personal data, direct victims to fraudulent websites or request money.

Recipients who get a suspicious message should not reply or click any links and should verify communications by contacting their state DMV through the official website or phone number. Consumers also can report scam texts to their mobile carrier and local law enforcement. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
