Reeves updates response to severe winter weather in Mississippi
JACKSON, Miss., Jan. 26, 2026 — Gov. Tate Reeves announced Monday that the state continues to respond to severe winter weather affecting Mississippi, and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency reported two fatalities connected to the storm.
MEMA said one fatality occurred in Hinds County. The agency’s public update did not identify the location of the second death.
MEMA is the state agency responsible for coordinating disaster preparedness, response and recovery. In events like widespread winter storms, MEMA typically works with state and local emergency responders, transportation departments and utility companies to assess damage, prioritize life‑saving operations and support communities in need.
Severe winter weather can produce hazardous travel conditions, power outages and other threats to public safety, which is why state coordination is critical. Officials have been monitoring conditions and continuing response efforts across the state. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
