Mississippi reports three more storm deaths, expands recovery efforts

Three more people have died in Mississippi’s winter storm, bringing the statewide death toll to 10, state officials said. Counties continue damage assessments amid ongoing recovery and response operations.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said it has received reports of 208 homes, five businesses and seven farms damaged or destroyed. Officials reported that 20 public roads sustained major damage and 12 were destroyed, and they warned those numbers are expected to rise as assessments continue.

The Mississippi National Guard has deployed 500 soldiers to assist with logistics and route and debris clearance and has sent aviation assets to move personnel and equipment, officials said. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is assisting with generator installation, and the state is filling requests from 40 counties for generators, fuel, tarps, meals ready-to-eat, bottled water, cots and blankets.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation said it deployed nearly 600 maintenance employees and more than 120 snowplows to north Mississippi and the Delta, working to clear more than 15,000 lane miles and 3,000 bridges. Crews are focusing on opening the two major impacted interstates, I-55 and I-22. MDOT and the Mississippi Department of Public Safety said they closed northbound I-55 from Batesville to Senatobia and all lanes of I-22 from the Tennessee state line to Red Banks; additional closures may be announced.

The Mississippi State Department of Health said it is standing up a medical needs shelter and deploying three ambulances with six personnel to Yalobusha County. The Mississippi Department of Human Services said SNAP recipients who lost power for more than four hours may apply for replacement benefits through Feb. 3, 2026. Power outages have fallen to about 106,100 from a peak near 180,000, officials said. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
