Mississippi awards more than $23 million for local infrastructure
JACKSON — Gov. Tate Reeves’ office announced Monday that more than $23 million in federal Community Development Block Grant funding will be distributed to cities and counties across Mississippi to support infrastructure and public facilities projects.
The $23,035,043.12 in funding, administered through the Mississippi Development Authority, will back projects including sewer and water system improvements, stormwater drainage upgrades, road work, Americans with Disabilities Act improvements and public building renovations.
The federally authorized Community Development Block Grant program is designed to help communities improve essential services, address blight and respond to urgent public needs. Projects must meet at least one national objective, such as benefiting low- and moderate-income residents or addressing threats to public health and safety.
Recipients named by the governor’s office include Brookhaven, Belzoni, Terry, Union, Taylorsville, Pelahatchie, Columbia, Ellisville, Charleston and Rosedale, among others.
Reeves said in a statement that the grants will help local governments address critical infrastructure needs and improve quality of life for residents statewide. MDA Executive Director Bill Cork said the agency works closely with local leaders to ensure the money is used effectively and supports long-term community needs.
U.S. Sens. Cindy Hyde-Smith and Roger Wicker also praised the investment, saying the grants will strengthen infrastructure, support economic growth and improve public safety across the state. Eligible projects through Mississippi’s CDBG Public Facilities Program include improvements to water, wastewater and drainage systems, streets and certain public buildings. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
