MEMA, Mississippi National Guard deliver supplies to impacted counties
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the Mississippi National Guard continue to deliver emergency supplies to counties affected by recent incidents, the agency said in a Facebook post. On Tuesday, authorities delivered 96,000 bottles of water, 1,152 meals, 14,000 tarps, 976 blankets and 288 cots to impacted counties, according to the post.
Chinook helicopters from the Mississippi National Guard continued to airlift supplies, and more than 119,000 pounds of materials have been delivered by the aircraft, MEMA said. Counties are distributing the items to the public at local distribution sites, the agency added.
MEMA coordinates state-level disaster response and recovery, while the National Guard often provides personnel, transportation and logistical support during emergencies. Heavy-lift helicopters such as the Chinook are commonly used when ground access is limited or when rapid delivery is required.
The shipments of water, meals, tarps, blankets and cots are intended to meet immediate needs of residents in affected communities while recovery and longer-term assistance are arranged. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
