Facebook post warns of scam
A brief post on Facebook simply read “Scam alert!” and urged users to be cautious. The post did not provide additional details about the nature of the alleged scam, who was targeted or when the activity occurred.
Scams on social media are a persistent concern for consumers and public officials because they can quickly reach large numbers of people. Fraudsters commonly use phishing links, impersonation of trusted organizations, fake offers and requests for payments to obtain money or personal information.
Users should look for common red flags such as unsolicited messages, requests for money or sensitive information, suspicious links and offers that seem too good to be true. Consumers are advised not to click links or download attachments from unknown senders and to verify any request by contacting the organization or person directly through an independent channel.
Those who believe they have been targeted should preserve evidence, change passwords, contact their bank if financial information was exposed and report the incident to the social platform, local law enforcement and the Federal Trade Commission. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
