Senate weekly summary

At noon on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025, Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann gaveled the Senate into the 2025 legislative session. President Pro Tempore Dean Kirby led the Pledge of Allegiance as the Mississippi National Guard’s 172nd Airlift Wing Color Guard presented colors before the body.

Lt. Gov. Hosemann appointed Sen. John Horhn, Sen. Lydia Chassaniol and Sen. Scott DeLano to the committee to notify the governor the Senate was ready for business, and he named Sen. John Polk, Sen. Michael McLendon and Sen. Bradford Blackmon, to the committee to notify the House that the Senate was ready for business.

The Senate passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 501 to honor the 30-year anniversary of the establishment of the Mississippi Court of Appeals and commend its accomplishments.

Senators began the committee meeting process to discuss agency budgets.

The legislative session is scheduled to run through April 6, 2025. The Senate faces a Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025, deadline for marking requests for general bills and constitutional amendments to be drafted and a Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, deadline for introduction of general bills and constitutional amendments.

On Tuesday, the Columbia High School Choir gave an opening day performance in the second-floor rotunda as part of Lt. Gov. Hosemann’s tradition of inviting students to share their talents at the Capitol. Lt. Gov. Hosemann and Sen. Joey Fillingane spoke with the choir.
