Officer-involved shooting in Richland

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting involving the Richland Police Department that occurred in the area of Highway 49 on April 24.

A Richland police officer conducted a traffic stop and search on a RV traveling on Highway 49 North. When inside the vehicle, the driver discharged a weapon at the officer. The officer then discharged his weapon, exiting the vehicle and a standoff occurred where another round of gunfire was exchanged. The subject was fatally struck. No officers were injured during the encounter.

MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office. This information is preliminary and subject to change.

The victim has since been identified as a 77-year-old man from Ocala, Florida, according to the coroner.
