New Albany Educator Arrested for Exploitation of a Vulnerable Adult

NEW ALBANY, Miss. — An educator has been arrested in New Albany following allegations of exploiting a vulnerable adult.

Police Chief Chris Robertson confirmed that Matthew Tyer, 42, was taken into custody Thursday afternoon on a charge of exploitation of a vulnerable adult.

According to Chief Robertson, the charge stems from a financial situation that occurred while Tyer was serving as an associate pastor at a local church, not during his employment with the school district.

New Albany School District Superintendent Tony Cook said Tyer was serving as an assistant principal as of Thursday, but as of Friday morning, he is no longer with the district. Cook emphasized that the alleged offense did not involve school property, personnel, or students.

Police say the case remains under investigation.
