Baptist preacher and former Confederate general Mark P. Lowery founded Blue Mountain Female Institute in Tippah County, MS with only forty female students.

According to Mississippi Baptist History, the Institute was the second Baptist college in Mississippi.

After many years of being a privately controlled school, in 1918 the Mississippi Baptist Convention took ownership. In 1920, the deed was transferred to Baptist.

According to Blue Mountain’s website, it was a liberal arts college for female students until 2005, when it became a co-ed institution.

In 2022, the College was renamed to Blue Mountain Christian University.
