U.S. Marshals fatally shoot rape suspect during Indianola warrant service
INDIANOLA, Mississippi — The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is probing a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred March 30 at a home on Mill Street involving agents with the U.S. Marshals Service, the agency said Monday.
According to the MBI, marshals were attempting to serve a rape warrant at the residence when the person being sought displayed a weapon toward agents. An agent fired a weapon, striking the subject and causing fatal injuries, the agency said. No agents suffered serious physical injuries.
MBI said it is continuing to gather evidence and assess the incident. Once the investigation is complete, the agency will share its findings with the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office, MBI said. Officials cautioned the information released so far is preliminary and could change.
State investigators routinely handle officer-involved shootings to provide an independent review. The U.S. Marshals Service is the federal agency that often handles fugitive and warrant operations. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
