Starkville named No. 1 best small town in South by USA Today
STARKVILLE, Mississippi — Starkville was voted the No. 1 Best Small Town in the South in USA Today’s annual 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, the publication reported Thursday, highlighting the city’s blend of culture, hospitality and small‑town charm.
An expert panel selected the nominees and readers determined the final rankings, USA Today said. The contest focused on towns with populations of around 25,000 or fewer.
Located in eastern Mississippi near the Alabama state line, Starkville sits in Oktibbeha County and is part of the Golden Triangle region that includes Columbus and West Point. Mississippi State University anchors the city and helps shape its economy and culture, but USA Today said Starkville stands out for its arts scene, historic districts and access to outdoor recreation, including birdwatching and nearby wildlife areas.
USA Today also pointed to attractions such as the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library and noted a growing food and retail scene, which local tourism leaders say draws visitors. City leaders and residents said the recognition reflects what locals have long known about Starkville’s mix of hospitality and amenities. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
