Sgt. Penton introduces bomb dog during PMHS visit

Sgt. Chris Penton spoke to students at PMHS, the Picayune Police Department said in a Facebook post that said the visit took place “yesterday.” He addressed College and Career Readiness, Leadership and Health classes and outlined how he entered law enforcement and advanced to his current position.

Penton discussed leadership principles and how they apply on the job and in personal life, the department said. He introduced Nitro, the department’s first bomb dog, and explained what Nitro is trained on, how he is trained and the training aids used.

The post said Penton demonstrated Nitro’s training with duffle bags containing training aids and described how handlers interpret changes in a dog’s behavior, proximity to an odor and trained final responses. He answered numerous questions during and after the presentation, the post said.

Bomb dogs are generally trained to detect explosives and assist law enforcement with public safety and search operations. The department did not provide additional details. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
