Pike County Sheriff’s Office warns of freezing rain, possible severe storms
The Pike County Sheriff’s Office warned of freezing rain and an increasing severe weather threat across parts of southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi, saying a freezing line has moved from McComb through southwest of Baton Rouge and is producing freezing rain and isolated pockets of sleet, the department said in a Facebook post.
Officials said the severe weather threat is expected to gradually increase across far southeastern Louisiana and coastal Mississippi late this morning into early this afternoon. The post warned of light ice accumulation on elevated surfaces such as bridges, creating hazardous road conditions.
The office also said the line of storms could produce damaging wind gusts and a brief tornado as it moves through far southeastern Louisiana and coastal Mississippi. The department assessed medium to high confidence in light ice accumulation across its highlighted area and low to medium confidence in the coverage of severe storms late this morning into early afternoon.
The message, posted by the Pike County Sheriff’s Office Public Relations Department, included a graphic highlighting near-term threats associated with the system. Freezing rain and sleet can quickly create hazardous travel conditions; residents and motorists should monitor local forecasts and advisories. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
