Oxford police warn residents of door-to-door storm cleanup offers

The Oxford Police Department is warning residents recovering from a recent ice storm to be cautious of individuals and companies going door-to-door offering tree removal and debris cleanup services, the department said in a Facebook post.

The department said there is no City of Oxford ordinance currently regulating pricing for storm cleanup and urged citizens to use good judgment when hiring outside contractors. Residents should be alert for possible price gouging or unusually high quotes, get multiple estimates, avoid paying large sums up front and ask for written contracts or invoices.

Police also advised caution toward companies pressuring homeowners to make immediate decisions. The department said it cannot verify whether a company or individual is licensed, insured or legitimate and is unable to recommend or approve specific contractors. Anyone who feels uncomfortable or believes they may be the victim of a scam should contact OPD at 662-232-2400.

After severe weather, door-to-door offers for cleanup and repairs commonly appear, and consumers are at higher risk of fraud or poor-quality work. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
