Oxford Police Department honors women for International Women’s Day

The Oxford Police Department is honoring the women who serve its ranks in observance of International Women’s Day, the department said in a Facebook post.

The post cited pioneers such as Flora Foster and said 26 women — including both sworn officers and professional staff — serve at OPD today, and praised their dedication, professionalism and compassion.

International Women’s Day is observed annually on March 8 and recognizes women’s social, economic, cultural and political achievements worldwide. Observances often prompt institutions to highlight contributions and promote gender equity.

Municipal police departments like Oxford’s play a central role in community safety, and recognition of women’s service underscores their impact on policing and community relations. Historically, women have been underrepresented in law enforcement, and many departments say greater diversity can affect policing practices and public trust. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
