Mississippi urges drivers to move over for roadside vehicles
Mississippi drivers must move over or slow down for stopped emergency and roadside vehicles with flashing lights, a recent Facebook post reminded motorists.
The state’s Move Over Law requires motorists to change lanes one lane away from any stopped emergency vehicle with flashing lights, if it is safe to do so. If a lane change is not safe because of traffic or road conditions, drivers must reduce speed and give plenty of room while passing.
The law applies to motorists approaching law enforcement vehicles, ambulances, fire trucks, tow trucks, and road maintenance and utility vehicles that are stopped on the shoulder of a highway or roadside with lights flashing. The measure is intended to protect officers, first responders, highway workers and tow operators who work at the roadside.
Violating the Move Over Law is generally a misdemeanor. Fines can be up to $250 for failure to comply and can increase to as much as $1,000 if the failure to move over or slow down results in property damage or injury. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
