Mississippi Museum debuts CrawFest to celebrate iconic crawfish
JACKSON — The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science will host the inaugural CrawFest on Saturday, Feb. 28, inviting visitors to celebrate one of the state’s most recognizable native species, the museum said.
The family-friendly festival runs from noon to 5 p.m. at the museum and will feature crawfish-themed cuisine, live music and hands-on educational activities exploring crawfish habitats and ecosystems across Mississippi, the museum said.
Guests can purchase crawfish-inspired dishes from local food vendors, including Sal & Phil’s Seafood and Dr. Flava’s Louisiana Kitchen, and enjoy live entertainment from TB Ledford and the Accumulators, the museum said. The band blends country blues, bluegrass and jug-band influences.
Organizers said the day will include interactive science stations, games and demonstrations led by area scientists that highlight crawfish diversity and the animals’ role in Mississippi’s freshwater ecosystems. Crawfish, also called crayfish or crawdads, are common in the state’s waterways and cuisine.
Admission is included with regular museum prices: $9 for adults, $7 for youth ages 3 to 18 and $8 for seniors 60 and older. Admission is free for Mississippi Museum of Natural Science Foundation members. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
